Dane DeHaan is an American actor. He is best known for his role as Jesse in the critically praised HBO drama series ‘In Treatment.’ He was a part of the 3rd season of this popular series and starred along with Gabriel Byrne.

DeHaan is also known for his roles in varied movies such as Chronicle, The Place Beyond the Pines, Kill Your Darlings, Metallica Through the Never. He was recently seen in the blockbuster hit ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2.’

Early life and Education

28 year old Dane William DeHaan was born on 6th February 1986 in Allentown, Pennsylvania to Cynthia Boscia, an executive at Knoll Furniture, and Jeff, a computer programmer. DeHaan has an older sister named Meghann Carl. He has Dutch, Italian, German, English, and traces of Northern Irish and Welsh ancestry. His last name ‘DeHaan’ means ‘the rooster’ in Dutch. DeHaan has stated that he had a super-supportive and very normal childhood.

For 3 years, Dane DeHaan went to the Emmaus High School in Emmaus, Pennsylvania. He was a part of the community theater at the school. For his senior year, he got enrolled at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, and eventually graduated in the year 2008. DeHaan has stated that it was at this university that he was ‘around artists for the very first time.’

Acting career

In 2008, Dane DeHaan made his Broadway debut in the short-lived revival of American Buffalo, as an understudy for actor Haley Joel Osment.

DeHaan also made his TV debut in 2008 when he guest-starred in one of the episodes of Law & Order Special Victims Unit. His TV career flourished after he essayed the role of Jesse in In Treatment, season 3. In the 4th season of True Blood, he portrayed Timbo’s character.

Dane DeHaan feature film debut was Amigo alongside Chris Cooper. The film was directed by two-time Oscar Nominee John Sayles. It was released in 2011 by Variance films.

In 2012, the 5 feet 7 inches tall DeHaan starred in 20th Century Fox’s camcorder drama movie ‘Chronicle’. It released on February3, 2012 to widespread popular appeal and rave reviews. The box office hit tells the story about 3 teens who get superpowers and narrate their subsequent experience on video.

Dane next featured as Cricket in The Weinstein Company’s Lawless which released on August 29, 2012. Directed by John Hillcoat, the movie had a great star cast including Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf, Jason Clark, Guy Pearce, and Gary Oldman. Set in resolute, depression-era Virginia, the film recounts the story of 3 brothers who work for a bootlegging gang that illegally sells moonshine.

DeHaan also starred in the film ‘Devil’s Knot’ alongside Colin Firth and Reese Witherspoon. This independent film was based on Mara Leveritt 2002 crime book titled Devil’s Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three, which was a story about the 1993 brutal killings of 3 young children and the debatable trial of 3 teens accused of the murders.

In another independent movie called The Place Beyond the Pines,’ directed by ‘Blue Valentine’ Derek Cianfrance, DeHaan worked with stars like Ryan Gosling, Eva Mendes, and Bradley Cooper. Dane essayed the role of Jason, Ryan’s young son. The film debuted at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival on 7th September.

In 2013, DeHaan portrayed the character of Lucien Carr in John Krokidas-directed independent film, ‘Kill your Darlings’. He got lots of critical praise for his role.The movie is loosely based on poet Allen Ginsberg’s life and tells the tale of the 1944 untold murder. In the process it brings together William S. Burroughs enacted by Daniel Radcliffe, a young Allen Ginsberg, Jack Huston, and Ben Foster.

In 2014, DeHaan played the role of Harry Osborn in the Marc Webb directed blockbuster hit ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’. It is said that DeHaan and his character were the main draw of the film.

In the coming months and years, DeHaan can be seen as James Dean, the actor, in the drama Life; as Zach Orfman in Life After Beth, a zombie comedy; and in Tulip Fever, a 17th-century romance.

Personal life- wife and trivia

On 30th June 2012, DeHaan married actress and partner Anna Wood in a private ceremony held in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. The couple had been in a relationship since 2006. They reside in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

DeHaan is a big fan of golf. He often posts pictures of himself enjoying the beautiful game on social networking websites.

In 2010, DeHaan got an Obie Award for his acting in the critically acclaimed, Annie Baker-directed Off-Broadway production of The Aliens.

DeHaan was the cover star on issue ten of Hero magazine published in October 2013. In 2014, he was photographed by Annie Leibovitz for ‘men’s spring advertising campaign’ for Prada clothing.

DeHaan is jovially regarded as a James Franco career stalker. He is also well-known as a Leonardo DiCaprio lookalike.
