Mangosteen is a tropical fruit growing in Southeast Asia, abundant in many nutrients that promise significant health benefits. The fruit bears resemblance in shape, similar to that of a pear. Mangosteen bears colors that range from reddish purple to a  deep shade of purple in its ripened state.

Though there is not much scientific proof to attest that mangosteen does help in curing  many health conditions, each and every part of the fruit is used in medicine, including the fruit, the bark of the tree, the rind, the twig and the fruit juice.  The taste of the fruit is similar to that of peach with a slightly acidic twist.

Health benefits of mangosteen

  1. The stem of the tree contains alpha-mangostin, an ingredient that treats bacteria that do not respond well to conventional bacterial treatments.
  2.  The antioxidant properties of mangosteen can empower the immune system with the ability to fight infections, wounds and injuries.
  3.  Mangosteeen contains xanthones that prevent the growth and spread of cancer cells.
  4. Consuming the fruit is known to take care of skin allergies because mangosteen contains antihistaminic properties and is anti-inflammatory in nature.
  5.  The tannin present in the rind of the fruit can be effective against diarrhea and mucus formation.
  6.  It has been seen in many cases that mangosteen has been an effective home remedy for stomach upset, urinary tract infections, thrush, menstrual problems, osteoarthritis, thrush and dysentery.
  7. Apply mangosteen can also relieve eczema and other nagging skin irritating problems.

History bears it that Queen Victoria used to call  mangosteen her favorite fruit. It is also used as a popular dessert fruit and added to jams.  Mangosteen is also sold as a health drink in the form of ‘xango juice’.

Side effects

  1. Though some say mangosteen is effective for preventing cancer-cell growh, it can also interfee with the working of the medicine used for the treatment.  So, it is better to check with the oncologist about consuming the fruit.
  2. If you are already taking a blood thinner, you should avoid consuming the fruit because it interferes with the body’s nature to prevent bleeding.
  3. Mangosteen can cause a condition called ‘lactic acidosis’ if there is accumulation of lactic aid in the body.
  4. It is not advisable to diabetic because of the high sugar content in the fruit.
  5. Mangosteen allergy is a known thing, so if you are allergic to the fruit, it is better to avoid in order to prevent exacerbating skin conditions.
  6. The consumption of the fruit is not known in case of pregnant and nursing women. So it is better to avoid to stay away from mangosteen consumption during that phase.

Mangosteen is not very common in the US, but you can find them in the form of canned products, puree or supplements at various food stores.

How to shop for high quality mangosteen

  1. Avoid choosing fruit that look wrinked or blotch.  Do not buy fruit that has yellowish appearance on the skin, because this is also a sign of over-ripeness. Just go for mangosteen that is rich in color (purplish) and have fresh looking leaves.
  2.  You can eat mangosteen pits,  only if they are small and edible but if they seem otherwise, spit them.
  3. Make sure that you wear an apron or old cloth when cutting the fruit because the juice is quite thick and cause stains on the clothes as well as the furniture.
  4. The purple part of the fruit contains the most juice. Yu may have to add apple juice to make the taste sweeter.
