Kim Kardashian’s Fight with Psoriasis

September 1, 2014 | 0

Kim Kardashian was identified with psoriasis on one of the episodes of her show “Keeping up with the Kardashians” in 2011. It happened after she saw red, flaky patches of skin. According to media sources after discovering this skin disease Kim Kardashian feared that her career would finish.

Psoriasis is a common and chronic skin disorder. It is incurable but treatable. In this condition elevated plaques of red skin start covering up certain areas of the skin that may itch or burn. Such areas could be arms, knees, trunk, elbows and lower back. Psoriasis is not contagious; however there are chances of getting it as an inherited disease. Kardashian too has reported that her condition could as well be inherited since her mother Kris Jenner was diagnosed with the same at the age of 30. It could also be a result of smoking, alcoholism and sunburns. Even an HIV infection can enhance the seriousness of such a condition.

The reality star has revealed how she camouflages the red patches that show up on her body. She has been outwardly expressive about her skin condition on the web through various social media. She posted the pictures of her leg that has the red patches before and after applying the bronzing make-up spray to keep those patches away. Her posts related to her skin condition had millions of followers. She shared pictures of her heart shaped Psoriasis on her leg with another oddly shaped patch on her upper arm. This too had more than 9 million twitter followers.

Kim was told by her dermatologist that the condition is incurable and could best be managed with a relaxed routine. For someone making a living through red carpet appearances and endorsement of products this was something unacceptable. However, the star has constantly been trying different skin creams to keep those patches away. She endorsed The Sally Hansen airbrush spray as a lifesaver for her. “I love this stuff! It really covers up my psoriasis so well!’ quoted Kim on her website. The 30- year old wails that she has a lot of pressure to look perfect since her career is all about ad campaigns and swimsuit photo shoots.

This celebrity is one among more than 7 million Americans having this disorder. Such a condition varies from a mild skin rash to an exhausting stage. According to experts it could be common among celebrities because of high stress levels, smoking, alcoholism and nervous outbreaks. Obesity, mental illness, viral and bacterial infections and family history could be the major causes of this condition. Having a family history of Psoriasis makes a person more vulnerable to this disease, as in the case of Kardashian.

However it not only affects adults but children as well. Men and women are equally affected by it, however among females it develops earlier. The first stage occurs in the age group 17-22 and the next in people 56-65 years of age. Also it affects all races equally but studies have shown that it is more common in western Europeans and Scandinavian populations and about 25% of psoriasis patients will be affected with psoriatic arthritis that causes pain and stiffness in joints.
