Robin Williams, one of the greatest entertainers of Hollywood, passed away committing suicide on August 11, 2014. He lives behind a legacy of interesting films that have both entertained and inspired us. Here are the top 10 best movies of Robin Williams –

10.  Awakenings (1990) –  This is a 1990 American drama movie adapted from Oliver Sacks’s 1973 novel of the same name. The plot is about the real life story of British neurologist Oliver Sacks, who is called ‘Malcolm Sayer’ in the movie. The character was played by Robin Williams, who hits upon the beneficial uses of the new drug called L-Dopa, in 1969. He administers it to catatonic patients who were affected by the epidemic encephalitis lethargica. Robert De Niro played a patient called Leonard Lowe; there are other patients as well; all of who are awakened by the drug but have to deal with a new life in a changed world. The movie was nominated for 3 academy awards.

9.  Good Morning, Vietnam(1987) – A racy, American war-comedy, this movie directed by Barry Levinson, written by Mitch Markowitz and Robin Williams in the role of a protagonist was a smash hit.  The movie was based in Saigon in the Vietnam War, in 1965. Robin Williams played the character of an RJ, on the Armed Forces Radio Services, which is quite famous with the troops but invites the angst of their superiors.  Williams was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor in a leading role for this film.

8.  One Hour Photo (2002) – This psychological thriller had Robin Williams playing the role of a photo-technician working in an image developing clinic.  The stark movie with a good twist was well received and is his most-underrated film. Robin Williams received a Saturn Award for Best Actor in 2003 for his performance.

7. Jack (1996)- One of the finest performances of Robin Williams, he played a 10 year old boy who has assumed the physicality of a 40 year old. This was a comedy-drama film and the people didn’t take too kindly to the movie, even though there was no faulting Robin Williams doing a wonderful take of a progeria stricken child.

6. Insomnia – This American psychological thriller film directed by Christopher Nolan had Robin Williams working with Al Pacino and Hillary Swank. Robin Williams plays a crime-writer in the film.

5. Hook (1991) – Robin Williams played Peter Pan in this fantasy-adventure film, directed by Stephen Spielberg.  The movie attained cult status over a period of time and co-starred big names like Dustin Hoffman, Julia Roberts and Bob Hoskins. The story was about Peter Pan who had forgotten his childhood.  Known as Peter Banning, he is a popular corporate lawyer living with his wife and two children. Hook(Dustin Hoffman) kidnaps Peter’s children, and the latter has to return to Neverland to get  his youthful spirit back to be a fitting rival to his enemy.

Dead Poets Society(1989)- Robin Williams played the role of an English teacher Joan Keating, who inspires students through his poems, and motivates them to ‘seize the day’.  The movie went to win awards in several categories (won Best Original Screenplay Academy Award) with a fair set of nominations for Williams too, including the Academy Awards.

Good Will Hunting(1997) – One of the most illustrious films of his career, Good Will Hunting went on to get Robin Williams, the much deserved Academy Award for the Best Supporting Actor.  It also won the Academy Award for the Best Picture and the Best Original Screenplay. Will Hunting (a janitor at MIT) has a mathematical acumen but needs help from psychologist Sean Maguire (Robin Williams) to find direction in his life.

Jumanji (1995) – One of the cult films of the 90s, which still holds forte now; the movie that revolved around a board-game was appreciated for its unique concept and some good special effects.  The movie was adapted from the 1981 children’s book of the same name, written by Chris Van Allsburg. The story is about a 12 year old boy called Alan Parrish, who is ensnared in Jumanji, while playing with Sarah, in 1969.  26 years later, when siblings Judy (Kirsten Dunst) and Peter (Bradley Price) play the game, they release the adult Alan (Robin Williams).

1. Mrs. Doubtfire (1993) – This movie proved that Robin Williams was invincible when it comes to challenging roles. He slipped in easily into the role of a woman, Miss. Euphegenia Doubtfire. The movie was the highest grosser of 1993, behind Jurassic Park.  The movie went on to win Best Makeup at the Academy Awards and fetched Mr. Williams, a Golden Globe for the Best Actor.
