Vinod Mehta, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Outlook Magazine Dies

Vinod Mehta, former Outlook editor Vinod Mehta died at AIIMS on March 8, 2015. This is a huge loss to the journalistic fraternity. He was 73.   He was born on May 31, 1942 in Rawalpindi British India.   When he was just 3, his family migrated to India. He studied in La Martinere school in Lucknow and then passed college with a third class degree (BA stream). Undaunted, he went on to experiment with many jobs, getting better at each one, including being a factory worker in Britain.  Finally, he got an offer to edit a men’s magazine, Debonair in 1974.

Vinod Mehta married Sumita Paul, a journalist who worked for Sunday Times of India and the Pioneer.  He credited his wife with revealing the secret about his daughter from a previous woman in his memoir.  He rose in his career  to become one of the most famous editors of all time, editing magazines like Indian Post, The Pioneer, The Independent, Indian Post, Sunday Observer and Outlook. He remained chairman of the Outlook Group till 2012. Thereafter, he remained an advisor to the publication.

Vinod Mehta also wrote the biography of Sanjay Gandhi and Meena kumari. He was also a panelist in the News Hour hosted by Arnab Goswami form Times Now and CNN-IBN (India at 9). As a senior journalist, he was most respected. He wrote a number of books,  a few of the popular ones being Mr Editor, how close are you to the PM? (1999) and Lucknow Boy: A Memoir (2010), and Editor Unplugged (2014)

Vinod Mehta was trying his level best to connect with his daughter who he had with a Swiss woman. He confessed about the affair and his daughter to his wife who encouraged him to write about this part of his life in his memoir. It is not clear if he got to meet his daughter.

VInod Mehta died of age-related ailments, he was in the ICU for weeks at AIIMS.
